An actor aware of all the ins and outs of their craft is well acquainted with the fact that getting an audition is not an easy task. Even with an agent and/or manager, it takes time to hunt for the roles you might be a good fit for. And without an agent, it is difficult to get your foot in the door.
We all know that Bollywood could be harsh and unwelcoming to newcomers. It takes a while before you are somewhat established and that only comes about if your determination is unwaveringly strong. But if you have the right mix of perseverance, willpower, and talent the never-ending quest for auditions would not be too hard for you.
With a pinch of professionalism and kindness, people would and want to work with you more. And before you know it, you can be the actor of your dreams. Needless to say, being your own agent until you can afford to bring one on board is going to be tough. But if you power through, you will land some of the career-defining roles while building up your acting resume. Here are a few tips to help you get your first few auditions:
Networking, networking, and networking!:Show business is people’s business. If you are good at dealing with people, you already have an edge over your competitors. Make contacts with the help of friends, family, and colleagues. As they say, it is a small world and everybody knows somebody. If you have an acting teacher or coach, approach them and ask them to pass the word around about you. It is possible that they know a few casting directors and can help further your career.
Additionally, you can contact student filmmakers or even theatre directors. Let them know you are on the market and seeking to work with talented collaborators. Keep your headshots and resume up-to-date and always ready the go. There is no way of knowing how and when destiny will throw great opportunities at you.
Self-submission sites: Because of COVID-19 and the restrictions that come with it, a lot of acting has shifted online. The virus has driven into their homes which is why it has become easier to find gigs online.
Some gigs only require you to audition and work from home on publications and websites like Dazzlr and backstage.com. They also offer roles worldwide so it does not matter where you live as long as you have a solid internet connection and talent. Make sure your online profile is detailed and eye-catching and your headshots are plenty and diverse. Your profile should have as much potential as your talent promises.
Social media platforms: Be it film, TV, or theatre auditions, there is not much you cannot find on social media these days. Of course, it will take time to tap into the right source, but once you do you have essentially hit the jackpot. Learning about auditions through event pages is something that you should do. Keep tabs on casting directors and famous agents’ social media. You can find a few auditions listed here. While they may not be the big break you are looking for, they will lead to that eventually.
Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are good places to start. LinkedIn is particularly meant for such purposes. Keep your accounts on social media active so that casting directors landing on your profile are captivated in just one look. First impressions will set out the tone for your professional relationship.
Don’t turn down small gigs: We all start somewhere, don’t we? Treating small gigs like they are beneath you will not work well for you in the future. No work is small as long as the people involved are excellent and dedicated to their art. Sign up for theatre, accept volunteer work, and even school dramas. All of these things will only add to your resume, give you more experience and a chance to hone your craft. Some of the greatest actors have emerged on the stage through this route.
Agents and casting director often frequent smaller venues to scout, hoping to pick up some new talent. It will only work in your favour if you bring your A-game to the table even while doing any gig. Your career may take off from here and bring you new roles.
Moreover, this is a good way to get the hang of professional acting and deciding for sure if this is what you want to stick with it. Think of it as a test drive.
